Treat yourself to some weather
During the handful of years in the 90s when I taught, I liked doing a still life exercise where I’d tell the group that we were going to end up with a dozen or so paintings, and some would work and others would be less successful. And yet all of them would present the same arrangement of objects under the same lighting conditions. What this means is that whether a painting works or not is barely influenced by subject matter.
A lot of students focus too much on what their subject should be, as if the what or the who is more important than the how and the why. I know I did. It takes a lot of work to get free from the tyranny of likeness, especially for those who are skilled at it. Nowadays, I prefer working with as little content as possible so I can minimize distractions and stay focused on bringing things into the world that wouldn’t otherwise be there.
