Wend your way together all alone

This painting was completed on the second anniversary of the death of my brother Chris. Or close enough, since we don’t know the day for sure. I posted it on his birthday. Still and likely always a single loop, but there are two distinct entities, top and bottom, almost identical, merging and coming apart, mirroring and reflecting each other. Where does one end and the other begin? Grab both your wrists, each with the other hand, and you’ll get the rotations of the symmetry relating the two forms.

In the coming year, I will do more paintings exploring multiple things that are one thing, and I’ll write more on the topic the next time I finish one. For now, I’ll just leave you with a poem that came to me complete as I woke up one morning last week. It’s called “Artist’s Statement.”

my wonder is

the lens that lets

me see

all else, here still,

without that lens

or me
